A Message from the Artistic Director

FRANCESCO VENTRIGLIA | Artistic Director

Welcome to The Nutcracker

Dear Friends,

It is with immense joy and excitement that I welcome you to our world premiere of The Nutcracker.

Alberta Ballet last unveiled this beloved classic 17 years ago. This year, we’re premiering a fresh interpretation, inspired by the exquisite artistry of Erté and featuring stunning set designs by Italo Grassi and breathtaking costumes by Gianluca Falaschi, handcrafted in Rome.

As I stand here, reflecting on this journey, I feel deeply honoured to collaborate with the talented dancers of Alberta Ballet, each bringing their unique vision and passion to this iconic ballet. The energy and enthusiasm within our company are truly infectious as we prepare to celebrate this milestone with you.

I am particularly excited to share that this production has engaged close to 200 dance students. In Edmonton, students come from dance schools all throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area, including Alberta Ballet’s own program, Alberta Ballet Classes. In Calgary, our children’s cast features the students from the professional training program of Alberta Ballet School and from Calgary’s Alberta Ballet Classes. We’re always thrilled to share the transformative power of dance across both of our home cities. I thank Ashley McNeil, Director of Alberta Ballet School, and her teams in Calgary and Edmonton for all the ways they strengthen our community with dance.

The Nutcracker holds a special place in my heart; Nureyev’s version was the first ballet I danced on stage at La Scala in Milan. The enchanting notes of Tchaikovsky’s legendary score have accompanied my growth as both a man and an artist, and I hope they resonate with you as much as they do with me.

We are thrilled to have the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in the pit, under the direction of the talented conductor Peter Dala, enhancing this magical experience with their live music.

Thank you for joining us on this remarkable journey. Together, let us celebrate the artistry, creativity, and community that make Alberta Ballet a cherished institution.

With heartfelt gratitude,

FRANCESCO VENTRIGLIA
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The Story

ACT I
The year is 1912 and it is Christmas Eve.

In his workshop, Drosselmeyer prepares for the Fasselmann family party. He fills a sack with gifts and, at the last moment, adds a special treasure: a gold-and-white Nutcracker.

On the snowy street, families exchange greetings. The energy of children rushing to and fro and the rustle of heavy coats set the evening stirring with anticipation.

Inside the Fasselmann home, guests enter a bright, polished room. A Christmas tree casts a festive glow. Clara, Fritz, and Louise help their parents welcome everyone and sparkling refreshments, macarons, and strawberries are passed.

Drosselmeyer arrives, greeted with affection and instant excitement from the children. He shares small magical flourishes – coins, cards, and scarves appearing and disappearing. He gathers everyone for a puppet show, then reveals three mechanical dolls: a toy soldier with crisp steps, a ballerina turning in graceful circles, and a pirate whose bold gestures draw laughter.

At last, Drosselmeyer places his sack at the centre of the room. Children gather close. Gifts appear in steady succession: Louise receives a doll, Fritz a toy airplane. In the flurry, Clara is overlooked. She steps away to a quieter corner, upset and in tears. Noticing this, Drosselmeyer reaches once more into his sack and brings out the Nutcracker. He places it in her hands, and her mood lifts at once. Overjoyed, she dances with the Nutcracker, and Drosselmeyer, pleased by her delight, takes up a violin to accompany her.

Drawn in by the excitement, Fritz rushes forward with his usual mischief and grabs the Nutcracker, jostling it hard enough to break it. Drosselmeyer repairs it, but Clara remains upset. Her mother tries to soothe her, yet Clara retreats to a nearby chair, holding the Nutcracker close.

The evening dance gathers momentum. Adults and children twirl in harmony with seasonal cheer. The Grandparents step forward, their quick steps recalling a younger elegance, and Grandfather surprises all with flashes of sprightly vigor.

From her chair, Clara watches the motion rise and fall until her gaze softens; her eyes close, and she drifts off to sleep.

The Christmas tree rises and the room transforms into a dreamscape, with the outline of her home off to one side.

The Mouse King creeps onto the scene, large and threatening, and mice scurry out to join him and surround Clara. She wakes inside their circle, and when she runs, the mice chase after her. Clara darts across the room, tossing macaron crumbs to distract the mice.

Drosselmeyer appears and takes the Nutcracker from Klara. With a sweep of magic, he transforms it into a life-sized mechanical figure.

Toy soldiers march in and take their places. Wooden race cars roll onto the scene, and the battle begins with the Nutcracker and the Mouse King driving forward in a contest of speed and daring. The Nutcracker wins the race, then faces the Mouse King in a duel. He strikes the Mouse King with a decisive blow, the Mouse King falls, and the mice carry their leader away.

As calm returns, the dream reshapes the Nutcracker. Before Clara’s eyes, he becomes a Prince.

Clara and the Prince dance together, their pas de deux marking the beginning of their connection as the world shifts toward the next stage of the dream.

Snowflakes appear, gliding in sweeping patterns around their Snow Queen and filling the space with wintry elegance.

The Snowflakes clear a path, and a teal and gold train glides in – finished in quiet glamour, a wintry Orient Express. Clara, the Prince and Drosselmeyer step aboard, bound for the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum.

ACT II
The train arrives at the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum.

The train pulls into the kingdom, the dream-world Clara has been carried into. It stops at a grand ballroom, an opulent space of softly structured light and soaring arches.

The Sugar Plum greets everyone warmly. Drosselmeyer and the Prince describe the drama of the battle, and the Sugar Plum presents Clara with a gift: the tiara of a Sugar Plum Princess. She then calls upon the court to celebrate with a series of dances from around the world.

These divertissements honour cultural traditions from far beyond the kingdom. A Spanish pas de deux, with rhythmic accents and poised flourishes, echoes the Andalusian tradition. An Arabian solo unfolds in smooth, sustained lines with a magical peacock. The Chinese dance is quick and precise, with a long-bodied dragon winding through the space. The Russian dance bursts forward with leaps, turns, and stamping energy, culminating in a sharp, decisive finish.

The Mirlitons appear next, carrying mistletoe and in white tutus shaped like sculpted frosting. The trio of dancers perform elegant patterns with light ornamental steps.

Mother Ginger enters in towering, comic splendour. From beneath her great skirt, the candy cane cooks rush out in neat formation, each carrying a mixing bowl. They whisk, stir, and bustle about, then dart back under her hem. Mother Ginger exits, and the stage begins to fill once more for Waltz of the Flowers.

The dancers form in pairs, and through lifts and leaps, create wide interlacing patterns. The music crescendos and the energy builds toward the dream’s grand finale.

The Prince and Clara return. Clara appears as a sugar plum princess crowned with the gifted tiara. Her iconic silhouette casts her in a new, dream-lit confidence. They dance a pas de deux where shared balances and extended lines reveal Clara’s emerging strength and the Prince’s steady support.

Then the Prince takes centre stage. His powerful solo showcases bold, assured movement: turns and jumps with determined resolve. Clara answers with her own solo, sure-footed and expressive. Reunited at centre stage, their final pas de deux offers a complete picture of who they have become.

FINALE
The kingdom gathers for a final celebration.

The dancers form a grand parade, a last display of the dream-world in all its variety. Then, figures fade, patterns loosen, and the kingdom recedes into darkness.

Light rises again on the parlour. Clara is in her chair, the Nutcracker in her arms. Drosselmeyer wakes her; the party is over. She runs to her parents, eager to share the adventure. They smile at her vivid tale and gently guide her toward bedtime.

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a leading Russian composer of the late 19th century whose works are notable for their melodic inspiration and their orchestration. He is regarded as the master composer for classical ballet, as demonstrated by his scores for Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty. Among the most subjective of composers, Tchaikovsky is inseparable from his music. His work is a manifestation, sometimes charming, often showy, of repressed feelings that became more and more despairing in his later years and were most fully expressed in his Sixth Symphony. Though his later work rejected conscious Russian nationalism, its underlying sentiment and character are as distinctively Russian as that of the Russian nationalist composers.

  • Born in Toronto, Peter Dala studied piano and conducting at England's Royal College of Music.

While in London, he worked at the Royal Ballet School as a repetiteur which led to his first contract as conductor/pianist with Basel Ballet, Switzerland in 1984. Guest performances included Monte Carlo, Germany, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Israel. He conducted his first opera at the International Opera Studio in Zurich, as well as guest conductor for the Zurich Ballet.

In 1988 Dala joined the Hungarian State Opera where he stayed until 1995 after which he moved back to Canada. In 1997 he joined Edmonton Opera as Chorusmaster/repetiteur and later as resident conductor until 2020.

Peter Dala started conducting for Alberta Ballet in 2001 with The Nutcracker, and twenty-five years later, is thrilled to be conducting this new production.

Alberta Ballet Dancers

Alberta Ballet Artistic Team

  • Originally from just outside of Seattle, WA, Reilley joined Alberta Ballet as a dancer in 2008 and has long considered Canada her home. After her fourteen-year career as a dancer with Alberta Ballet, Reilley transitioned into the administrative side of Alberta Ballet in the Artistic Department. She is currently the Artistic Executive Manager and enjoys helping behind the scenes and sharing the knowledge that she has gained while working within the organization over the years. Ballet continues to play a central role in her life not only through her own career but also through her husband, a former Alberta Ballet dancer, and their two children, who are both dedicated students at the Alberta Ballet School.

  • Raven has been working in the arts for 18 years as a stitcher, costume crafter, dresser, wardrobe assistant, head of wardrobe, production director and now as a part of the Alberta Ballet artistic team. Being a local Albertan, Ravens’ work has been concentrated in Calgary, but has also taken her around our great province, across Canada, to the US and Europe in theatre, film and dance. More than half of her career has been spent at Alberta Ballet and she is so excited to be a part of the artistic team, assisting in bringing ballet magic to our community and beyond.

  • Originally, from Medicine Hat, Rebecca relocated to Calgary after completing a BFA in Theatre Studies from the University of Lethbridge to pursue her passion for the arts. She has worked for various arts organizations in the city in the last 7 years and is enjoying her time working with both the artistic and production teams at Alberta Ballet. She is looking forward to what this season brings and is grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of people and artists.

The Alberta Ballet Foundation:
The Foundation of the Art.

The Alberta Ballet Foundation is delighted to help present Francesco Ventriglia’s new production of The Nutcracker, the cherished holiday tradition that inspires wonder in children year after year.

Across Alberta, families share stories of this beloved classic –whether they return each season or remember dancing in the children’s cast themselves. We celebrate that enduring joy as young dancers light up the stage and children in the audience experience the magic of this Christmas favourite. Beyond the theatre, more young people across our province are discovering their own creativity through our Growing Up Strong free outreach dance classes.

Your generosity helps children dream boldly and experience the transformative power of the performing arts.

The Alberta Ballet Foundation welcomes you as we bring the magic of The Nutcracker to life—on stage, in our classrooms, and throughout the communities we serve.
